In the subway station, there is Ahrum. She is ordinary college student in Seoul. Exhausted, checks her schedule to go part time teaching. Dazzling lights wakes her up. Then, she finds herself in strange place, filled with shadows. Student and her mom give pressure on her, but there is nothing she can do about it. All the sudden, the space changes and ahrum is infront of a white door. Ahrum knocks on the student’s door, but it never opens. Instead, her name is called out of nowhere. It was her professor. Ahrum mistakes the professor as student’s mom but, she mentions scholarship and her grades. Ahrum denies all the reality and finally wake up. She finds herself still in the subway station, waiting for the train to come. Thinking that she had a weird dream, she hurries to go part time.
As the door opened, she get into mysterious maze of curtains. The more she tries to get out, the more deeply she gets into the maze. There is only voices and shadows Ahrum can never reach. She keeps saying “let me out”, but her friends voice talks about her incompetence over and over again. In the end, Ahrum can’t stand anymore and cry out that she did her best till then, yelling “let me out”
Someone opens eyes in the subway. She is not Ahrum anymore. She is with a face of the mother, the professor, the friend. Then, she hurries into the train to go part time job.
All the people from the movie talk to Ahrum that she is not enough, not hardworking and not trying hard. When Ahrum tries to deny it, no one listens to her. The mother, the professor and friend –all the characters that triggers stress to Ahrum-is in different outfit but actually same. That is why she keeps mistaken them as the student’s mother, who she is going to see tonight. But, this character is not just villain. At the end, someone opens her eyes at the same subway station where Ahrum was waiting for the train.. but she is that bad character in ahrum’s situation. This ending deeply relates to the idea I wanted to talk about through this film. She is not that bad character anymore. She is another Ahrum, who is pushing herself to the end in every situation, struggling with reality.
I focused on ways to deliver the idea through light and shadow. Colors and visibility. Shadows could be dark, oversized, 2 dimensional. But Ahrum fears those shadows and reacts to them. Therefore, Shadow relates to her fear toward figures in her dream. Shaking shadows and effects of shadows moving in different ways expresses her own feelings toward situation and represents state of the dream.
It also has deep relation with space; how the character reacts to certain space settings. The space is not limited to actual space. It has widen its meaning to virtual reality of light and installed settings. So, in the studio border between inside of the projected light and darkness creates different worlds.
Music was important part, too theme song, specially composed for this film is variated through the story to deliver the main idea. Also, it explains every other different spaces in the movie and ahrum’s feelings. Additionally, I tried various editing effects to maximize the feelings of Ahrum, as the film is all about her
